Virginia Peanut Soup originated in West African maafe via enslaved Africans who introduced peanuts to Virginia. Hotel Roanoke has served it since 1940; Colonial Williamsburg's King's Arms Tavern serves a canonical version; every Virginia school field trip includes tasting it.

The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA encompasses the Tidewater region and Williamsburg, anchoring Virginia Peanut Soup, an African-American adaptation of West African maafe via the enslaved Africans who introduced peanuts to Virginia.

This list is almost certainly incomplete; the Hampton Roads MSA holds further hyper-local dishes that have not yet surfaced in the survey.

Virginia Peanut Soup — Tidewater / Williamsburg / Roanoke, VA

Velvety, creamy soup made from pureed peanuts, chicken stock, and cream. African American origin, adapted from West African maafe via enslaved Africans who introduced peanuts to Virginia. Hotel Roanoke has served it since 1940 (created by Chef Fred Brown; recipe kept secret until the 1950s; serves ~48 bowls daily). Colonial Williamsburg’s King’s Arms Tavern serves a canonical version. Every Virginia school field trip includes tasting it. Confuses people outside the mid-Atlantic.
